It is only the MacBook5,1 model identifier machines that we are referring to being limited to 6GB. To try to alleviate some of the confusion, here is a full listing of the models. Yes, Apple does sell 8GB of memory for their current line of MacBook Pro machines and so does OWC. The Story Continues… “Secret” Firmware lets Late ’08 MacBooks use 8GB. The machines were faster the more memory we installed until more than 6GB was present. Unfortunately we found the same scenario on all the machines. Of course, when we heard the rumors circulating again that the Firmware Update may have silently addressed this issue as well, we got excited and performed the qualification testing again after installing the update. Simply put, while System Profiler recognized that there was indeed 8GB of memory installed, once more than 6GB of memory was actually put to use, the performance of the overall machine diminished. However, there was something interesting we found with our testing when trying to qualify the laptops to accept 8GB of memory. This is a great file for us to research though I recommend that you force a firmware upgrade on this mac and then dump it again and place it here for review.Apple released MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.8 on December 8th, 2009, sparking a new interest in the Late 2008 MacBook Pro models and their maximum memory capacity.Īpple supports up to 4GB of memory in these machines, but OWC has done the testing with our memory modules and has been able to support 6GB of memory since their release. The compressed file containing your system overrides and your serial number cannot be found. When I cannot find the serial number for some reason or another I will look for the compression header as explained above and manually search. This is where I commonly find the serial number by searching directly below it for "hwc" in a text editor. If you search for BZh11AY in a bin file you will normally see the Fsys.overrides section preceded by FF's. I could still be overlooking something here though. I have grabbed a couple random bin's from my desktop to be sure this is normally the bz2 compression header and the results still point to yes. I feel like your file has been modified by someone who knows more about this than I do. I did a comparison of the similar model bin that I have in the repository and grabbed the compression header to the end of the file and threw it into a new file appended with bz2 to look at the overrides and was surprised that I couldn't find this header in your bin file. I have run into a couple instances of this, but it has not been often. I have been looking into your file today and have found no region pertaining to the serial number which is strange.
